Jaguar Land Rover recently took the wraps off its all-new Range Rover Evoque. Designed and engineered in Coventry and Warwickshire, the second generation Evoque will be aiming to both replicate and build on the huge success of its predecessor.
The original Evoque, launched in 2010, was the model which saw Jaguar Land Rover sales spiral skywards and underpinned a long period of sustained growth. With over 800,000 units sold worldwide, the Range Rover Evoque has accounted for one in four Land Rover sales over the last eight years.
Built at Jaguar Land Rover’s Halewood factory in Merseyside, the next version will continue to roll off the production lines there. The new model represents a £billion investment by the Coventry car maker in its UK manufacturing programme.
JLR’s all-new Premium Transverse Architecture is at the core of the new Evoque and it is available with a choice of petrol, diesel and mild hybrid electric engines.
The hybrid option, which works by harvesting energy normally lost during deceleration and storing it in the under-floor battery, is a first for the Evoque and part of Jaguar Land Rover’s intent to have an electrified version of all its models by 2020.
At launch there is the 48 volt mild hybrid system and Ingenium four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines. However, towards the end of 2019, a newly-developed three-cylinder, plug-in hybrid engine will make its debut.
The new model is instantly recognisable as an Evoque – when car makers have a winning formula, it’s best not to tinker with it too much – but also manages to look fresh, new and modern.
Stand-out features include the deploying of retractable door handles and the twin touchscreen Touch Pro Duo system, both of which were first rolled out on the sleek Range Rover Velar.
Rear seat passengers benefit from more legroom and luggage space has been increased by ten per cent to 591 litres.
Land Rover has also described the new Evoque as ‘the all-seeing SUV’ as it comes with ClearSight Ground View technology making the bonnet ‘invisible’.
