NEWS ➤ Refreshed 2019 Ford Mondeo revealed in Brussels
By Wayne Gorrett
Ford revealed their refreshed Ford Mondeo for 2019 at the Brussels Motor Show this week. The new saloon receives exterior design tweaks, additional driver assistance features, new diesel options and the range now gets a hybrid estate variant.
External design changes are subtle and most will be hard pressed to notice any change at all. However, Ford says there are now greater visual differences between the Mondeo’s various trim levels. Range-wide there’s a new grille, with the Titanium model receiving horizontal chrome slats, a black finish applied on ST-Line cars, and flagship Vignale cars receiving the ‘flying-V’ grille currently applied to other Vignale models.
Also at the front, the bottom grille has also been tweaked and now sits between new fog lights in a revised, more aggressive looking front bumper. Around the back, the light clusters are new and intersected either by a chrome or satin silver strip spanning the width of the tailgate.
The new rotary gear selector deployed on the new Focus arrives because the Mondeo has taken on the brand’s latest eight-speed automatic transmission. In turn, this has allowed Ford to equip the facelifted Mondeo with a new adaptive cruise control system with complete stop and go ability.
Ford has expanded its Mondeo estate line-up by adding a hybrid version. The powertrain is the same 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motor combination already found on the saloon hybrid, developing a maximum output of 184bhp and allowing electric only running over very short distances.
The space taken up by the hybrid powertrain means that the Mondeo Estate Hybrid is not as practical as petrol and diesel powered versions of the estate. It features a boot 403 (500) litres in size, with 1,508 (1,605) litres of space with the rear seats folded flat.
All versions of the 2019 Mondeo go on sale in March and first deliveries are expected in early May.
