Volkswagen has revealed its new range-entry SUV, the dinky T-Cross. It fits in beneath the T-Roc, Tiguan and Touareg in the German manufacturer’s range and rides on the same platform and underpinnings as the Polo hatchback. It offers the styling and feel of an SUV, but for those who perhaps aren’t quite ready for a full-fat version yet, this could be the one for you.
At 4,107mm long and 1,588mm high, the T-Cross is larger than the Polo but smaller than the T-Roc released last year. Its boxy styling is reminiscent of the trend-setting Skoda Yeti from 2008, but adheres to VW’s style language first introduced in the latest Tiguan and Touareg SUVs.
Customers in other markets will be offered both petrol and diesel engines, but UK buyers will get a proven 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels when it arrives in the Spring. However, transmissions on the T-Cross may be specified as either a five- or six-speed manual gearbox, or VW’s seven-speed DSG automatic.
Four familiar trim levels will be available for UK buyers on the T-Cross – S, SE, SE-L and R-Line – each offering a gradated level of standard equipment. On offer will be Volkswagen’s Active Info Display, plus several features trickled down from more expensive models, such as Front Assist featuring Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking, Blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, rear traffic alert and the e-call emergency alert and support service.
While based on the Polo, the bigger dimensions of the T-Cross mean more practicality, boasting boot space of around 420 litres with the rear seats in place. The single-piece rear seat row can be slid laterally by up to 14 centimetres, with the rear seatbacks capable of folding in a 60:40 split.
Orders for the T-Cross are expected to open in January 2019, with first customer deliveries scheduled for the Spring.
