NEWS ➤ All-new 2019 Mazda3 Hatchback: Specs and techs
By Wayne Gorrett
- Mazda3 Hatchback is now available to order in the UK.
- Five trim levels and two engines at launch, deliveries begin in May.
- Innovating Skyactiv-X engine and the Saloon to follow later in the year.
Following its world debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Motor Show in November, Mazda has announced UK specifications and technical details for its 18-model line-up of the all-new Mazda3 hatchback, the first of the Japanese firm’s next-generation vehicles.
However, the brand’s much-trumpeted new compression ignition Skyactiv-X powertrain will not be available at launch but is expected to join the engine line-up later in the year, along with a new Saloon body style. The Skyactiv-X is expected to develop 180hp and return ‘diesel-like’ efficiency.
Initially offered with the firm’s 122ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol or 116ps 1.8-litre Skyactiv-D diesel engine, UK lessors will have a choice of five trim grades: SE-L, SE-L Lux, Sport Lux, GT Sport and GT Sport Tech.
Standard kit on the range-entry SE-L includes high-end tech such as a windscreen projecting colour head-up display with traffic sign recognition, active cruise control and LED headlights. The list lengthens to include navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an advanced eight-speaker audio system.
SE-L Lux adds a reversing camera, smart keyless entry, heated front seats, while Sport Lux sees the high-class cabin enhanced with additional chrome detailing, a frameless rear view mirror and rear privacy glass.
GT Sport sees the introduction of black leather seats with power adjustment, a heated steering wheel and Bose audio, while the range-topping GT Sport Tech features a suite of additional active safety equipment, including a 360o camera and driver attention alert with interior camera.
With the exception of the range-topping GT Sport Tech model, which is paired exclusively with the 122ps Skyactiv-G petrol engine, all trim grades are offered with both diesel and petrol engines, while a choice between six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes is offered across the entire range.
For improved efficiency, the Skyactiv-G petrol engine now features a cylinder-deactivation system and Mazda’s M-Hybrid 24V system.
Depending on chosen transmissions, the 2.0-litre petrol emits from 115g/km and can reach 62mph in 10.4 seconds. CO2 emissions for the new 1.8-litre diesel range from 106 to 126g/km, with fuel consumption of up to 58mpg.
Inside, all models feature a seven-inch colour TFT driver instrument display, while the latest version of Mazda’s MZD-Connect infotainment system features a larger 8.8-inch central display, improved navigation and a revised BMW-like multimedia commander control dial.
The new Mazda3 wears a low nose, slim line LED headlights, reduced wheel arch gaps and a longer wheelbase than the outgoing 3. Trims SE-L and SE-L Lux feature 16-inch alloys, while from Sport Lux onwards 18-inchers, rear privacy glass and piano black window garnish denote higher trim grades.
